Translatio Musicae: Circulation and Use of Music in Early Modern Europe

How did music circulate in early modern Europe? Which routes, networks and mediators facilitated the transmission and exchange of music manuscripts and prints? In this volume, thirteen scholars offer fresh perspectives on the circulation and use of music during this period — not only between distant parts of the Continent, but also within individual regions or cities.
A shared focus lies in the ways French and Italian music was transmitted to Northern Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. A central argument is that no relocation occurs without some form of change or transformation — that is, translation. Translatio thus refers both to the physical movement of music and to the creative adaptations it often undergoes in new contexts, highlighting the inherently transformative nature of such processes.

Hur spreds musik i det tidigmoderna Europa? Vilka vägar, kontakter och förmedlare möjliggjorde överföringen och utbytet av musik i handskrifter och tryck? I Translatio musicae undersöker tretton forskare hur musik spreds och användes under den tiden. De anlägger nya perspektiv på musikens rörelse långväga över kontinenten men också inom enskilda regioner och städer. Ett särskilt fokus ligger på hur fransk och italiensk musik överfördes till norra Europa under 1600- och 1700-talet.
Translatio syftar både på hur musik rörde sig över geografiska avstånd och på den ofta kreativa anpassningen av den till nya sammanhang, vilket synliggör att förflyttning oundvikligen också förändrar.
