(Text, Speech and Sign: Linguistic perspectives.) This publication aims at reflecting the great variety of Swedish linguistic research. Topics include aspects of Swedish dialect phonology and phonotactics, language teaching and learning, historical linguistics, phonetics, computational linguistics, bilingualism, typology and sign language. Among the issues addressed are: How do linguistic patterns arise? What is the role of vocabulary in second language learning. Is there a critical period? Are the phonetic properties of syllables shaped by our physiological make-up? How do European languages express 'movement': Areal patterns. Sign language - the emergence of a new linguistic research area. Bengt Sigurd (+ 2010) was a leading figure in Swedish linguistics. The chapters in this volume present samples of current research in areas to which he himself made significant contributions and where, after his demise, he continues to play an inspirational role.
