(Swedish Research on Antiquity in the Mediterranean. Gustaf VI Adolf and Field Archaeology in Historical Perspective.) The present conference publication offers insights on Swedish classical studies and archaeological fieldwork around the Mediterranean, from the early nineteenth century to the 1970s. The chronological and thematic focus lies on King Gustaf VI Adolf, 1882-1973, and his role as archaeologist and as chairman of a number of archaeological societies, expeditions and research institutes during his long period as Crown Prince, 1907-1950. The volume investigates and discusses the influence of this royal link with Swedish archaeological projects in terms of research initiation, infrastructural support and publications. It comprises the geographical areas around the Mediterranean that have been covered by Swedish archaeological research and teaching. The ambition has been to place archaeological fieldwork in a wide historical, social, cultural and political context. The volume offers keys to interpretation such as nationalism, politics, rivalry, cultural heritage reception, satellite effects, initiators in relation to structures, cultural, social and economic conditions, as well as gender roles and perceptions of tradition. It aims to meet the increasing interest in research history and the history of academic disciplines of recent years.
