In 1995 The Royal National City Park (the Ulriksdal-Haga-Djurgården-Brunnsviken area in Stockholm) was designated the world's first National Urban City Park by act of the Swedish parliament. Through the directives of the Environmental Code ("Miljöbalken") the aim was to preserve the park's natural and cultural values and to protect the area's natural and cultural heritage against ongoing exploitation. In this volume six contributions focus on the relation between national law and the cultural historical values of the park: the implementation of the Environmental Code in relation to the national urban park, the participation and litigation rights of environmental associations, and the role of the County Administrative Board in relation to heritage protection and community planning processes. In an Appendix a number of relevant law cases are discussed with reference to legal documents. The contributions were first presented at a conference at The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities in 2016 in collaboration with The Ecopark Association and The Committee for the Royal Gustavian Park.
